The internal documents purport to show Facebook knew it was harming people, specifically teenagers, and knew it years ago. The documents potentially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/facebook-whistleblower-hearing-testimony-frances-haugen-senate-outage-wsj-leak-2021-10\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">give lawmakers plenty of ammunition<\/a> for more regulations on the tech giant.&nbsp;<br \/>In the weeks since, Facebook has increasingly emphasized its push into the metaverse, a welcome distraction for the company.<br \/>The word \u00ab\u00a0metaverse\u00a0\u00bb is a term borrowed from science-fiction and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/what-is-metaverse-facebook-mark-zuckerberg-roblox-animal-crossing-2021-8\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">refers to a future version of the internet that people access<\/a> using VR and AR technology, rather than laptops and phones. CEO Mark Zuckerberg first publicly announced in July that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/zuckerberg-said-facebook-will-eventually-become-a-metaverse-company-2021-7\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">he wants Facebook to eventually become a \u00ab\u00a0metaverse company.\u00a0\u00bb<\/a><br \/>Whatever name Zuckerberg settles on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/facebook-plans-rebrand-change-new-name-focus-metaverse-2021-10\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">will reflect its metaverse mission<\/a>, and Facebook will still exist within that umbrella \u2014 likely similar to the decision Google took in 2015 when it stood Alphabet up as its parent company.<br \/>The company is trying to \u00ab\u00a0divert the conversation from their current problems onto the metaverse, which is exciting and futuristic,\u00a0\u00bb Anne Olderog \u2014 senior partner at the consulting firm Vivaldi with 20 years of brand strategy experience \u2014 told Insider. \u00ab\u00a0And truly, nobody understands\u00a0\u00bb the metaverse, which is \u00ab\u00a0also a brilliant move.\u00a0\u00bb<br \/>The company will continue to face \u00ab\u00a0grizzly\u00a0\u00bb problems, but Facebook will certainly survive given its resources, political savvy, and lobbying power, Eric Schiffer, CEO of private equity firm The Patriarch Organization, told Insider.<br \/>\u00ab\u00a0This is not the kiss of death for Mark Zuckerberg,\u00a0\u00bb Schiffer said. \u00ab\u00a0It is absolutely a genius move to shift away, to rebrand to the metaverse in the process, and wash away the past pain in part, but also own the space that will be the dominant battleground over the next couple of decades,\u00a0\u00bb referring to the metaverse.<br \/>However, Olderog said Facebook&rsquo;s focus on the metaverse as well as its rebrand is a \u00ab\u00a0brilliant\u00a0\u00bb idea, but it isn&rsquo;t enough to counteract the damaged public perception that has left the company&rsquo;s reputation in tatters.<br \/>\u00ab\u00a0Ultimately you really need to do the fundamental work of addressing the problems because otherwise, you&rsquo;re going to replicate the very same problems they&rsquo;re now facing on the metaverse level,\u00a0\u00bb she said.<br \/>Reputational damage isn&rsquo;t the only thing Facebook has to worry about.<br \/>Facebook&rsquo;s leaked documents revealed the company considers its popularity with children, tweens, and teens to be crucial to its survival in the face of competition from rivals like TikTok. That&rsquo;s alarmed some critics.&nbsp;<br \/>Prof. Andrew Przybylski, a psychologist at the University of Oxford who has studied how children interact with social media and video games, said there was a particularly illuminating part in one of the leaked documents about children where interviewed subjects said they just wanted to \u00ab\u00a0laugh and have a good time\u00a0\u00bb on Facebook.<br \/>\u00ab\u00a0I&rsquo;m surprised that they [Facebook] didn&rsquo;t buy                                                   <span class=\"component rich-tooltip reference-autolinker no-help\" data-component-type=\"reference-autolinker\">                           <a data-site=\"bi\" data-keyword=\"Epic Games\" data-analytics-product-module=\"Auto-Linker\" data-analytics-product-area=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/what-is-epic-games\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">Epic Games<\/a>                           <span style=\"font-size: 0px;\"><\/span>                         <\/span>,\u00a0\u00bb Przybylski added. \u00ab\u00a0That was my first reaction when I read the papers,\u00a0\u00bb&nbsp;<br \/>Epic Games makes the wildly popular \u00ab\u00a0Fortnite,\u00a0\u00bb and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/what-is-epic-games-metaverse-and-is-it-worth-billions\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">CEO, Tim Sweeney, has also spoken publicly about the metaverse.<\/a><br \/>Przybylski is not sure whether Facebook will ever deliver the metaverse it has promised, but he does think the idea holds lots of potential if the company wants to cash in on kids&rsquo; attention through virtual reality and gaming-like experience.
