Shared Responsibility.<br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A national poll found 4 in 5 parents say children aren\u2019t as thankful as they should be. <\/span><br \/>Story at a glance<br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanksgiving is a time when Americans across the country gather together with friends and family to show gratitude for all they have.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>But with the holiday just days away, a new national poll suggests a large number of parents with young children believe kids today aren\u2019t as appreciative as they should be.\u00a0<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/mottpoll.org\/reports\/parent-efforts-teach-children-about-gratitude\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The poll conducted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the C.S. Mott Children\u2019s Hospital at the University of Michigan found\u00a04 out of\u00a05 parents, 81 percent, with children ages 4 to 10 said they agreed that kids today are not grateful for what they have.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than half of parents polled, 58 percent, said they are concerned they are giving their children too much, while 42 percent said they sometimes are \u201cembarrassed by how selfish their child acts.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The poll included responses from 1,125 parents.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany parents may look back to their own childhood and, in comparison, wonder if they are giving their child too much in the way of material things,\u201d Sarah Clark, co-director of the poll, said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/935231\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cParents may have watched their child behave selfishly, such as refusing to share with other children or saying they don\u2019t like a particular gift,\u201d Clark said.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><strong>America is changing faster than ever!<\/strong> <strong>Add Changing America to your <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ChangingAmerica\/\"><strong>Facebook<\/strong><\/a><strong> or <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/changingamerica\"><strong>Twitter<\/strong><\/a><strong> feed to stay on top of the news.<\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the research unsurprisingly found nearly all parents believed it\u2019s possible to teach their children gratitude with different strategies to help them show more appreciation.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>Eighty-eight percent of parents said they regularly make sure their children say \u00ab\u00a0please\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0thank you\u00a0\u00bb, while 11 percent said they occasionally do and 1 percent saying they rarely do.\u00a0<br \/>Household chores also appeared to be a common method.
