The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/tag\/facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> scam improperly used the names and faces of Diesel Power Gear and \u201cDiesel Brothers,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/go.discovery.com\/tv-shows\/diesel-brothers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Discovery Channel television show<\/a>. Their likeness was used without permission in posts that promised thousands of dollars to entrants who followed steps and simply showed that they downloaded the <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.stash.stashinvest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stash finance app<\/a>.<br \/>On June 26, 2020, Kevin Passons, a pastor at Cornerstone Pentecostal Church in Grand Saline, Texas, and his wife, Kim, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kimnkevin.passons\/posts\/3063824070353777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shared a meme on Facebook<\/a>. It was posted in the aftermath of demonstrations that followed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/news\/2020\/06\/12\/george-floyd-criminal-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the murder of George Floyd<\/a>. The meme read: \u201cWe need to establish a new law. Anybody caught rioting and looting, who is also on welfare, will forfeit their benefits for life. Instead, we\u2019ll redirect that money to the businesses that suffered a loss.\u201d<br \/>The meme was shared thousands of times in the summer of 2020, and continued to receive shares throughout 2021.<br \/>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2014\/08\/17\/us\/ferguson-photos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>, the picture was captured around Aug. 16, 2014. It showed Mustafa Alshalabi cleaning up damage at Sam\u2019s Meat Market after his store was looted during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/trump-tweet-weak-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unrest in Ferguson, Missouri<\/a>. The violent demonstrations came in the aftermath of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shootings-police-us-news-st-louis-michael-brown-9aa32033692547699a3b61da8fd1fc62\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the fatal shooting of Michael Brown<\/a>, a Black man who was gunned down by a white police officer.<br \/>Around Nov. 19, 2021, the months-old Facebook post saw a sizable spike in shares in the aftermath of the verdict that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/ap\/2021\/11\/19\/kyle-rittenhouse-cleared-of-all-charges-in-kenosha-shootings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acquitted<\/a> Kyle Rittenhouse. Rittenhouse was on trial after being accused of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/kyle-rittenhouse-water-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shooting and killing<\/a> two people and wounding another in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on August 25, 2020.<br \/>After the Rittenhouse acquittal, the June 2020 Facebook post from the Passons was shared at least an additional 100,000 times over the course of just four days. As of Nov. 23, it showed a total of 326,000 shares.<br \/>Within the new shares were a seemingly countless number of comments visible from scammers named <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/aFm1b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N\u2019k Santri Nalangsa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/5ehKN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Akang Erik Terterter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/YTmPc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arra Razqisyaai HarimNna Mull<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/5Hf5S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ella Sisca<\/a>, and likely many others. (The Passons had nothing to do with the scam.)<br \/>The comments often read either \u201ccheck my profile you win\u201d or \u201cyou win check my profile.\u201d Other messages said: \u201cVisit my profile, do it with faith You have become the winner, which I specifically chose.\u201d We also noticed: \u201cI chose you specifically, please visit my profile and fill out the registration form.\u201d<br \/>On the Facebook profiles, the scammers claimed, falsely, to be affiliated with Diesel Brothers and Diesel Power Gear. They said that all users needed to do was follow several steps and install the Stash finance app in order to be entered to win $10,000. Further, it\u2019s true that the real <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DieselBrothersTV\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diesel Brothers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Diesel-Power-Gear-779610692097160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diesel Power Gear<\/a> Facebook pages have posted about legitimate giveaways in the past. However, this scam from accounts that asked users to visit their profiles should be avoided. Scams like these could lead to phishing, theft of financial or personal information, or other negative outcomes. A glance at the scammers\u2019 profiles showed that they likely originated from Indonesia.<br \/>While some longtime readers might believe that it should be obvious that these offers are not legitimate, it\u2019s important to keep in mind that not all Facebook users are alike.<br \/>The <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/5ehKN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Akang Erik Terterter<\/a> scammer profile alone had been <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/5ehKN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">followed nearly 2,000 times<\/a>. It\u2019s likely that at least a handful of those followers went through the steps in an attempt to sign up for the Diesel Brothers Facebook scam or another one in the past.<br \/>Aside from the four accounts we found, there were likely other profiles used for the scam. Facebook limits the number of comments that a user can make in a short period of time.
