The former PayPal executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2014\/6\/9\/5794548\/david-marcus-leaves-paypal-to-lead-facebook-messaging\">joined Facebook in 2014 to run Messenge<\/a>r but eventually took over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/6\/18\/18682290\/facebook-libra-cryptocurrency-visa-mastercard-digital-currency-calibra-wallet-announce\">plans to launch a new cryptocurrency and wallet<\/a>, known at the time as Libra and Calibra, respectively.<br \/>After some pre-Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/5\/26\/21270437\/facebook-calibra-novi-rename-digital-wallet\">name changes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/10\/19\/22734487\/facebook-novi-digital-wallet-pilot-program-payments-diem-cryptocurrency\">the digital wallet launched with a small pilot in October under the name Novi<\/a> but only in two countries (the US and Guatemala) and support for a single form of crypto, the Paxos stablecoin. The currency that spurred so much ire from regulators and politicians around the world, now called Diem, has yet to appear.<br \/>In posts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/davidm\/posts\/10166264804120195\">on his Facebook page<\/a> and Twitter, Marcus says, \u201cWhile there\u2019s still so much to do right on the heels of hitting an important milestone with Novi launching \u2014 and I remain as passionate as ever about the need for change in our payments and financial systems \u2014 my entrepreneurial DNA has been nudging me for too many mornings in a row to continue ignoring it.\u201d He announced that Novi VP of product Stephane Kasriel, previously an early PayPal employee and the CEO of Upwork, will take over the leadership of the team.<br \/>While there\u2019s still so much to do right on the heels of launching Novi \u2014 and I remain as passionate as ever about the need for change in our payments and financial systems \u2014 my entrepreneurial DNA has been nudging me for too many mornings in a row to continue ignoring it. (2\/7)<br \/>     Related   <br \/>Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/davidm\/posts\/10166264804120195?comment_id=10166264837945195\">commented<\/a> on the Facebook post, saying, \u201cI\u2019ve learned so much working with you and I\u2019m so grateful for everything you\u2019ve done for this place. We wouldn\u2019t have taken such a big swing at Diem without your leadership and I\u2019m grateful you\u2019ve made Meta a place where we make those big bets. You\u2019ve built a great team, and while I\u2019ll miss working with you, I\u2019m looking forward to working with Stephane to lead the team going forward.\u201d<br \/>As recently as October, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/10\/19\/22735171\/facebook-novi-diem-libra-calibra-cryptocurrency-digital-wallet-zuckerberg-senate\">politicians were openly calling<\/a> for Facebook to drop its cryptocurrency plans. At that time, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davidmarcus\/status\/1450447443250728962\">Marcus said<\/a>, \u201cI do want to be clear that our support for Diem hasn\u2019t changed and we intend to launch Novi with Diem once it receives regulatory approval and goes live. We care about interoperability and we want to do it right.\u201d <br \/>What his departure means for the project overall is unclear, as well as how it fits in with Zuckerberg\u2019s metaverse vision for the future. His departure also comes one day after fellow cryptocurrency proponent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/11\/29\/22808979\/twitter-jack-dorsey-steps-back-platformer\">Jack Dorsey stepped down from his position as the CEO of Twitter<\/a>.
