The episode posited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pOnOpB3yN1k\">nonbinary identities<\/a> as up for \u201cdebate\u201d and featured nonbinary people and allies alongside anti-trans parents and the Daily Wire\u2019s Matt Walsh.\u00a0<br \/>Media Matters examined our dataset of news and politics pages on Facebook and found that among these, right-leaning pages were nearly alone in reacting to the episode, driving more than 3.3 million views to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=326055599409747\">one selectively edited video<\/a> in which Walsh mocked the nonbinary panelists, repeatedly asked them to define womanhood, and then accused them of trying to \u201cappropriate womanhood and turn it into basically a costume that can be worn.\u201d<br \/>From January 17 through 24, right-leaning Facebook pages related to news and politics posted about the <em>Dr. Phil<\/em> episode far more often and earned vastly more total interactions than either nonaligned or left-leaning pages.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=443659027493746\">Both Shapiro <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=442619167597732\">Walsh shared a video<\/a> titled \u201cLeftists Traumatized After Meeting Me\u201d in which Walsh mocked the nonbinary guests of the episode for sharing that they had experienced nightmares and depression as a result of their appearance on the show.<br \/>Walsh also used his appearance on the episode <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100044171722408\/posts\/516411033174616\">to tease<\/a>\u00a0his future plans to launch \u201can all out assault on gender ideology,\u201d saying that \u201cWe have been working on something that will make the <em>Dr Phil <\/em>episode seem tame and boring by comparison.\u201d Walsh has a history of promoting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/daily-wire\/youtube-facebook-and-twitter-daily-wires-matt-walsh-makes-extreme-attacks-trans-kids\">hateful views <\/a>about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/daily-wire\/youtube-daily-wire-host-declares-two-men-shouldnt-be-allowed-adopt-babies\">LGBTQ people<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/daily-wire\/youtube-daily-wire-host-embraces-white-nationalist-conspiracy-theory-it-sounds-you-want\">as well as<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/daily-wire\/daily-wire-host-calls-black-lives-matter-lynch-mob\">racist and <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/daily-wire\/daily-wire-host-female-sports-reporters-are-effort-make-game-less-appealing-people-game\">misogynistic comments<\/a>. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/daily-wire\/amazons-bestselling-lgbtq-book-hateful-picture-book-comparing-being-trans-pretending-be\">previously published a children\u2019s book<\/a> comparing being trans to pretending to be a walrus, which was mislabeled and shot to the top of Amazon\u2019s LGBTQ bestsellers page before being removed from that category and recategorized as \u201cPolitical Commentary &amp; Opinion.\u201d<br \/>The <em>Dr. Phil<\/em> episode focused on the use of nonbinary pronouns at a time when a growing number of Americans use pronouns other than she or he to describe themselves. According to a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2021\/06\/22\/first-population-estimate-lgbtq-non-binary-adults-us-is-out-heres-why-that-matters\/\"> 2021 study from the Williams Institute,<\/a> more than 1 million adults in the U.S. describe themselves as nonbinary. Using the correct pronouns for people is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/education\/resources\/tools-and-strategies\/lets-get-it-right-using-correct-pronouns-and-names\">sign of respect<\/a>, and the use of stated pronouns can help reduce confusion for the many people &#8212; including many cisgender (non-transgender) people &#8212; who have ambiguous names or gender presentations. Affirming the identities of trans youth, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childtrends.org\/blog\/research-shows-the-risk-of-misgendering-transgender-youth\">including through correct pronouns,<\/a> reduces the odds of serious mental health conditions like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1054139X13003844\">depression<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/whatweknow.inequality.cornell.edu\/topics\/lgbt-equality\/what-does-the-scholarly-research-say-about-the-acceptancerejection-of-lgbt-youth-2\/\">suicidal ideation<\/a>.\u00a0<br \/>Although the episode presented the idea of gender neutral pronouns as somewhat novel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/07\/27\/rising-shares-of-u-s-adults-know-someone-who-is-transgender-or-goes-by-gender-neutral-pronouns\/\">26% of Americans<\/a> say that they know someone who uses them, up from 18% in 2018. This episode was just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/tucker-carlson\/60-minutes-segment-trans-health-care-becomes-ammo-right-wing-media-attacks\">the latest example<\/a> of how careless, allegedly neutral content that depicts the lives of LGBTQ people as debateable can be weaponized by right-wing media to promote hate and harassment online.\u00a0<br \/>Using CrowdTangle, Media Matters compiled a list of 1,773 Facebook pages that frequently posted about U.S. politics from January 1 to August 25, 2020.<br \/>For an explanation of how we compiled pages and identified them as right-leaning, left-leaning, or ideologically nonaligned, see the methodology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/facebook\/right-leaning-pages-dominated-conversation-facebook-during-supreme-court-confirmation\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<br \/>The resulting list consisted of 771 right-leaning pages, 497 ideologically nonaligned pages, and 505 left-leaning pages.<br \/>Every day, Media Matters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/facebook\/facebooks-top-political-posts\">also uses<\/a> Facebook&rsquo;s CrowdTangle tool and this methodology to identify and share the 10 posts with the most interactions from top political and news-related Facebook pages.<br \/>Using CrowdTangle, Media Matters compiled all posts for the pages on this list that were posted between 11:40 a.m. EST January 17, 2022, and 11:40 a.m. EST January 24, 2021, and were related to Walsh&rsquo;s appearance on Dr. Phil.
