Meta claims to be \u201ctackling\u201d it, but we\u2019ve probably all experienced scam reports to Facebook and Instagram being ignored or closed with no action. But why expect anything different? Meta makes money from all the scam ads and \u201cengagement.\u201d<br \/><strong>Of course, some say<\/strong>\u00a0<i>all<\/i> cryptocurrencies, NFTs and DeFi are scams. Not to mention:\u00a0Nothingverse.<br \/><strong>What\u2019s the craic?<\/strong> Sarah Perez reports\u2014\u201c<a title=\"read the full text\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/01\/27\/ftc-u-s-consumers-lost-770-million-in-social-media-scams-in-2021-up-18x-from-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow ugc noopener\">US consumers lost $770 million in social media scams in 2021, up 18x from 2017<\/a>\u201d:<br \/><strong>\u201c<tt>A large majority\u2009\u2026\u2009involve cryptocurrency<\/tt>\u201d<\/strong><br \/>A growing number of U.S. consumers are getting scammed on social media. \u2026 That number has also increased 18 times\u2009\u2026\u2009the FTC said, as new types of scams involving cryptocurrency and online shopping became more popular. This has also led to many younger consumers getting scammed.<br \/>\u2026<br \/>Facebook and Instagram were where most of these social media scams took place. \u2026 More than half (54%) of the investment scams in 2021 began with social media platforms, where scammers would promote bogus investment opportunities or connect with people directly to encourage them to invest. \u2026 A large majority of the investment scams now involve cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why does it matter?<\/strong> Sara Fischer and Margaret Harding McGill tells us\u2014\u201c<a title=\"read the full text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/crypto-scam-ftc-2079c3b2-6237-4ff8-92f2-d08382cd0d70.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow ugc noopener\">Crypto leads to massive surge in online scams<\/a>\u201d:<br \/><strong>\u201c<tt>Bogus investment sites<\/tt>\u201d<\/strong><br \/>Cryptocurrency is an easy target because while it&#8217;s surging in popularity, there&#8217;s still a lot of confusion about how it works. \u2026 One type of crypto scam reported to the agency involves someone bragging about their own success to drive people to bogus investment sites.<br \/>\u2026<br \/>&#8220;We put significant resources towards tackling this kind of fraud and abuse,&#8221; said a spokesperson for\u2009\u2026\u2009Meta. &#8220;We also go beyond suspending and deleting accounts, Pages, and ads. We take legal action against those responsible when we can and always encourage people to report this behavior when they see it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Horse\u2019s mouth?<\/strong> Here\u2019s the FTC\u2019s Emma Fletcher\u2014\u201c<a title=\"read the full text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/blogs\/data-spotlight\/2022\/01\/social-media-gold-mine-scammers-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow ugc noopener\">Social media a gold mine for scammers<\/a>\u201d:<br \/><strong>\u201c<tt>Urgent need for money<\/tt>\u201d<\/strong><br \/>Social media is also increasingly where scammers go to con us. More than one in four people who reported losing money to fraud in 2021 said it started on social media with an ad, a post, or a message.<br \/>\u2026<br \/>For scammers, there\u2019s a lot to like about social media. It\u2019s a low-cost way to reach billions of people. [It] is a tool for scammers in investment scams, particularly those involving bogus cryptocurrency investments \u2014 an area that has seen a massive surge. \u2026 People send money, often cryptocurrency, on promises of huge returns, but end up empty handed.<br \/>\u2026<br \/>If you get a message from a friend about an opportunity or an urgent need for money, call them. Their account may have been hacked \u2013 especially if they ask you to pay by cryptocurrency, gift card, or wire transfer. \u2026 To learn more about how to spot, avoid, and report scams\u2014and how to recover money if you\u2019ve paid a scammer\u2014visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/scams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow ugc noopener\">ftc.gov\/scams<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who would fall for such scams?<\/strong> <a title=\"read the full text\" href=\"https:\/\/news.slashdot.org\/comments.pl?sid=20680595&amp;cid=62213595\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow ugc noopener\">King_TJ<\/a> hates to admit it:<br \/><strong>\u201c<tt>Facebook is complicit<\/tt>\u201d<\/strong><br \/>Hate to admit it, but I fell for one of these scams on Facebook myself. It was probably about a year ago. I ran across a &#8220;seller&#8221; in one of the ads that scrolled by on my feed. \u2026 There were plenty of comments posted ranging from other people interested in one, to claims they got one and liked it.<br \/>\u2026<br \/>After a little while\u2009\u2026\u2009the tracking info showed the package as delivered, but I never received anything at all. \u2026 When I started digging around more on Facebook after that, I realized the scammers\u2009\u2026\u2009were actually running dozens of ads for various products, giving out web URLs that were almost identical except with one letter changed in their name. Reported the original ad\u2009\u2026\u2009to Facebook, but\u2009\u2026\u2009got no response.<br \/>\u2026<br \/>That&#8217;s when it struck me that Facebook is complicit in all of this, in the sense they make a lot of ad revenue off of these scams. \u2026 It&#8217;s more profitable for them to turn a blind eye and simply take one down when a user complains about it specifically.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facebook is complicit?<\/strong> Carrie Goldberg\u2014<a title=\"read the full text\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cagoldberglaw\/status\/1486793667369226250\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow ugc noopener\">@cagoldberglaw<\/a>\u2014puts it more bluntly:<br \/>Platforms love scams because user engagement is so high from all the accounts they create, posts, and messaging; not to mention the panicked use by victims.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the latest imaginary-money scam?<\/strong> <a title=\"read the full text\" href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=30107881\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow ugc noopener\">Animats<\/a> offers this example:<br \/><strong>\u201c<tt>Transferring money from suckers to minters<\/tt>\u201d<\/strong><br \/>What was once the biggest NFT, Axie Infinity, has tanked. Today, for the first time, their Smooth Love Potion token fell below one cent. \u2026 The peak was around $0.36 last summer. This is the one all those people in the Philippines were playing a grinding game to earn, and paying about US$1000 up front to get into the game. [It] combined the worst features of a gig economy, multi-level marketing, and a Ponzi scheme.<br \/>\u2026<br \/>The big problem is that NFTs are\u2009\u2026\u2009mostly closed zero-sum systems for transferring money from suckers to minters. \u2026 What props up this house of cards is the success of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether. We now have hundreds of billions of dollars invested in <em>memes<\/em>. So people think that investing in new memes is a real business. The history of financial scams suggests that it is not.<br \/>\u2026<br \/>What could possibly go wrong?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Social <i>media<\/i>?<\/strong> <a title=\"read the full text\" href=\"https:\/\/news.slashdot.org\/comments.pl?sid=20680595&amp;cid=62214457\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow ugc noopener\">arglebargle_xiv<\/a> suggests a different word:<br \/>The scammers realised that\u2009\u2026\u2009sites like Fecebook are absolutely perfect for, well, social <i>engineering<\/i>. It&#8217;s the perfect tool for con artists and scammers, you put all the data they need to take you in on the social engineering site, or you join groups that identify you as the perfect target\u2009\u2026\u2009connecting you up to the people who want to scam you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is the emperor naked?<\/strong> <a title=\"read the full text\" href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=30107383\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow ugc noopener\">johanneskanybal<\/a> thinks so:<br \/>Half the YouTube comments on any investment video are scams, half the promoted tweets on Twitter are scams, half the Facebook ads are some type of scam. Imagine a traditional newspaper publishing a single one of those and what consequences they would face.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile,<\/strong> <a title=\"read the full text\" href=\"https:\/\/news.slashdot.org\/comments.pl?sid=20680595&amp;cid=62213631\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow ugc noopener\">quonset<\/a> has little sympathy:<br \/>At this point, if people are so enamored with anti-social media that they abandon any semblance of common sense, they deserve what they get.<br \/>\u2026<br \/>Yes, I am victim blaming.
