Unusual phrases like \u00ab\u00a0ar Di\u00a0\u00bb frequently appear, with hundreds of users seeming to adopt identical typing styles. Some posts compare Diana to the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/geronimo-why-the-uk-obsessed-with-an-alpacas-death-sentence-2021-8\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">Geronimo the recently-deceased alpaca<\/a>, while others discuss how she would have loved a \u00ab\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/scaryduck.blogspot.com\/2021\/01\/a-brief-history-of-chippy-tea.html#:~:text=In%20its%20classic%20form%2C%20Chippy,a%20fish%20and%20chip%20shop.\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">chippy tea<\/a>,\u00a0\u00bb which is traditionally considered a staple of working-class British cuisine involving fries and battered fish.<br \/>Insider spoke to five members of the group who said it is an elaborate roleplay that they all enjoy participating in. According to these members, the group in its current form exists to parody Facebook groups which are perceived to be populated by an older demographic of people seeking to genuinely pay tribute to the late Princess of Wales.<br \/>\u00ab\u00a0The whole point of the &lsquo;Ar Di&rsquo; meme is that it mocks\/imitates the aesthetic of a kind of sincere &lsquo;boomer wine mum,'\u00a0\u00bb who might typically refer to Princess Diana as \u00ab\u00a0our Di,\u00a0\u00bb long-time group member Alex, 26, told Insider, adding that he \u00ab\u00a0engages in mock love for Diana\u00a0\u00bb himself in the group. Alex requested Insider withhold his last name in order to preserve his privacy.<br \/>In order to emulate this \u00ab\u00a0aesthetic,\u00a0\u00bb group members adopt a seemingly earnest, sometimes muddled style laden with kisses, regional colloquialisms, and spelling mistakes.&nbsp;<br \/>The roleplaying element is part of a wider online trend. As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2019\/jul\/08\/millenials-baby-boomers-roleplaying\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">The Guardian,<\/a> social media users seem to have developed an affinity for ironically imitating older generations, with Facebook groups like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/1288197298014311\/\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">\u00ab\u00a0A group where we all pretend to be boomers\u00a0\u00bb<\/a> amassing nearly 300,000 members.&nbsp;<br \/>As with the Diana Facebook group, Insider found that most of the accounts engaging with this roleplay appear to be attached to real people.&nbsp;<br \/>It represents a new type of online intergenerational dynamic spearheaded by younger millennials and Gen Z, which is based more on in-jokes and mockery than on outrage or call-out culture. Insider spoke to experts and members of the group to find out why thousands of young people are roleplaying as middle-aged Princess Diana stans.&nbsp;<br \/>The group was created in February 2019 and currently has four listed moderators, but only one responded to Insider&rsquo;s request for comment, saying they were no longer active in the group. Countless group members have also said in comments and posts that the group does not have an admin and is \u00ab\u00a0organic,\u00a0\u00bb with users having free reign to post what they wish.&nbsp;<br \/>Alex, who said he has been a member of the group for two years, thinks it didn&rsquo;t start out this way. \u00ab\u00a0Initially the group was sincere so the &lsquo;NO TROLLS ALLOWED&rsquo; was an attempt by the mods to maintain order,\u00a0\u00bb he said.<br \/>According to Alex, the jokes started subtly, with users slowly infiltrating the group by role-playing as sincere Diana mourners, but trolls have now taken it over in its entirety. These days, while the \u00ab\u00a0NO TROLLS ALLOWED\u00a0\u00bb warning remains, \u00ab\u00a0trolling is implicitly encouraged,\u00a0\u00bb he said.<br \/>Insider viewed a range of older posts in the Facebook group. The posts from early 2019 indicated a more genuine tone from members, with more apparent jokes taking place in comments rather than posts themselves before more overt memeing appeared over time as posts. As the joking increased, seemingly genuine users appeared to abandon the group, with Insider finding several posts by these users that criticize the satirical nature of the group.<br \/>In September, one group member wrote, \u00ab\u00a0Me and my family have followed Diana for many years and she was a prominent figure in our household. However after a quick scroll through all I have seen are posts mocking her death, comparing her to Aldi supermarkets and mocking her tragic demise.\u00a0\u00bb She added that she was \u00ab\u00a0taken aback,\u00a0\u00bb and questioned whether the group was intended to be pro- or anti-Diana.<br \/>The post became a meme within the group, with users posting various edits of it and creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/1226989367714407\/?notif_id=1636543685170799&amp;notif_t=group_r2j_approved&amp;ref=notif\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">breakaway group<\/a> dedicated to jokes about it, which has nearly 2,000 members.&nbsp;<br \/>According to Alex, the origins of now-established memes within the group like the phrase \u00ab\u00a0ar Di\u00a0\u00bb instead of \u00ab\u00a0our Di\u00a0\u00bb or spelling \u00ab\u00a0angle\u00a0\u00bb instead of \u00ab\u00a0angel\u00a0\u00bb come from the time where trolls and genuine mourners coexisted in the group. These phrases parody regional accents and typos perceived as common in older users.<br \/>Alex thinks the trolls deliberately posted in such a way that made it \u00ab\u00a0unclear if the person was trolling or if they were a sincere fan with bad spelling.\u00a0\u00bb This, he said, is part of the \u00ab\u00a0beauty\u00a0\u00bb of the group.&nbsp;<br \/>Dr. Phoenix Andrews, a researcher at Leeds University focusing on fandoms and internet culture, said this ambiguity is integral to the art of \u00ab\u00a0shitposting,\u00a0\u00bb a type of meme in which a person posts an intentionally confusing, outrageous, or off-topic piece of content in order to derail or aggravate an online conversation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>According to Andrews, the freedom to shitpost is part of the appeal of communities like the Diana memorial group because they \u00ab\u00a0allow people to let off steam and share in-jokes.\u00a0\u00bb&nbsp;<br \/>\u00ab\u00a0Part of the fun of shitposting is confusing &lsquo;normies,&rsquo; including supposedly smart people who can&rsquo;t spot the hallmarks of a joke,\u00a0\u00bb she said.&nbsp;<br \/>22-year-old Hannah Van-de-Peer has been a member of the group since last winter. She told Insider, \u00ab\u00a0I only ever use the &lsquo;ar Di&rsquo; Facebook group to shitpost with everyone else. Obviously, I know Rod Stewart looks nothing like Princess Diana, but part of the fun is about making the references more obscure and distorted.\u00a0\u00bb&nbsp;<br \/>A renewed fascination with Diana has emerged in recent years, thanks in part to the most recent season of                                                   <span class=\"component rich-tooltip reference-autolinker no-help\" data-component-type=\"reference-autolinker\">                           <a data-site=\"bi\" data-keyword=\"Netflix\" data-analytics-product-module=\"Auto-Linker\" data-analytics-product-area=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/how-to-use-netflix-tips-and-tricks\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">Netflix<\/a>                           <span style=\"font-size: 0px;\"><\/span>                         <\/span> series \u00ab\u00a0The Crown,\u00a0\u00bb which portrayed the relationship between Princess Diana (Emma Corrin) and Prince Charles (Josh O&rsquo;Connor). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/most-popular-shows-the-crown-season-4_l_5fba8c2bc5b61d04bfa1c365\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">HuffPost reported<\/a> that in the month it was released, it was Netflix&rsquo;s most-watched show, according to the                                                   <span class=\"component rich-tooltip reference-autolinker no-help\" data-component-type=\"reference-autolinker\">                           <a data-site=\"bi\" data-keyword=\"streaming\" data-analytics-product-module=\"Auto-Linker\" data-analytics-product-area=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/what-is-streaming\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">streaming<\/a>                           <span style=\"font-size: 0px;\"><\/span>                         <\/span> service. Most recently \u00ab\u00a0Twilight\u00a0\u00bb actor Kristen Stewart played the Princess in the movie \u00ab\u00a0Spencer,\u00a0\u00bb which premiered earlier this month <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2021\/11\/kristen-stewart-spencer-princess-diana-movie-oscars-twilight.html\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">to<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/insider\/spencer-kristen-stewart-princess-diana-royal-biopic-film-the-crown-b962266.html\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">much<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/life\/news-entertainment\/what-the-critics-are-saying-about-spencer-as-hotly-anticipated-diana-movie-hits-theaters\/\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">fanfare<\/a>.<br \/>Interest in Diana has also spread on TikTok. Tags such as #princessdiana and #dianaspencer have amassed 2.1 billion and nearly 250 million views respectively, with creators making videos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@broadcastboys\/video\/6940407771351239942?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id7025625010552063493\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">discussing her life<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@simplesmurf\/video\/6933675208641400070\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">using her as fashion inspiration<\/a>, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@wales.firefly\/video\/7013442091699195138\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">dressing up as her and roleplaying<\/a>.&nbsp;<br \/>Several posts from the Facebook group about Diana have <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ElijahYoung1998\/status\/1454788005055639552\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">gone viral on Twitter.<\/a> Member Jason Reid, 38, said he posts satirical content in the group as well as often sharing posts from the group to his 17,000 Twitter followers.<br \/>\u00ab\u00a0The &lsquo;ar Di&rsquo; phrase is universal now,\u00a0\u00bb he said. \u00ab\u00a0I hear people saying it when I&rsquo;m out and about at LGBTQ+ events.
