(WTAP) &#8211; Wood County Sheriff Steve Stephens made a statement about his recently announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtap.com\/2021\/11\/15\/sheriff-steve-stephens-retire-december-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retirement <\/a>on Facebook Monday evening.<br \/>Stephens said he has been under intense stress, which has had a negative affect on his health. He apologized for not filling out his 2020-2024 term as sheriff and thanked his supporters. He also said he has learned a lot about himself recently and while he has tried to change his attitude, it appears to have been too late.<br \/>Stephens said he isn\u2019t looking for sympathy. He said he wants to enjoy life with his wife and watch his grandchildren grow up. You can read the full post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/stevestephens144\/posts\/10224274377319812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<br \/>A Charleston-based law firm had been investigating complaints against Stephens on behalf of the Wood County Commission when Stephens announced his retirement.<br \/>That investigation has since been suspended. However, he is still at the center of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtap.com\/2021\/11\/15\/second-lawsuit-filed-against-wood-county-sheriff-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two law suits<\/a> for his alleged mistreatment of workers in the sheriff\u2019s department.<br \/>He was also handed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtap.com\/2021\/10\/12\/no-confidence-wood-county-deputy-sheriffs-association-says-it-no-longer-supports-sheriff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vote of no confidence<\/a> by the Wood County Deputy Sheriff\u2019s Association in October.<br \/>Wood County Commission has been charged with finding an interim replacement for Stephens, before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtap.com\/2021\/11\/16\/wood-county-voters-will-elect-new-sheriff-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voters pick someone<\/a> in 2022 to complete the 2020-2024 term.<br \/>Stephens said in his post that he would do anything he could to make it a smooth transition.<br \/>His retirement takes effect December 1.<br \/>He did not immediately respond to our request for comment.<br \/><i>Copyright 2021 WTAP.
