But what was he really carrying? &#8211; The Advocate"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"cfbc967f0983488262956e73eca9483a\" data-index=\"1\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3859091246952232\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- blok -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3859091246952232\" data-ad-slot=\"1334354390\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n\n<\/div>\n<p>The Tangipahoa School System Building in Amite City, La.<br \/>The Tangipahoa School System Building in Amite City, La.<br \/>School and law enforcement officials in Tangipahoa Parish are disappointed that parents inflamed an already-tense situation by taking to social media as local deputies tried to investigate reports of an armed man on school grounds.<br \/>The \u00ab\u00a0threat\u00a0\u00bb turned out to be a man with an umbrella.<br \/>Hammond Eastside Magnet Elementary School and Hammond High School, whose campuses lie a quarter-mile from each other, both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theadvocate.com\/baton_rouge\/news\/crime_police\/article_edc0ff72-48bc-11ec-9e5e-e37a07764884.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">went on lockdown<\/a> Thursday after law enforcement received a call about a man carrying a gun in the elementary school parking lot. Deputies, police and fire crews responded to the scene around 3:30 p.m. and the schools postponed dismissal.<br \/>Update 11\/19\/2021, 11:45 a.m.: The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff&rsquo;s Office said Thursday night that video surveillance footage showed the man deeme&hellip;<br \/>In a Facebook group for local school parents, meanwhile, people whose children were at the two schools clamored for answers. Some said their students had heard gunshots. Others asked whether law enforcement had found the \u201cactive shooter.\u201d Some referred to a \u00ab\u00a0shootout\u00a0\u00bb taking place.<br \/>Later that evening, after law enforcement cleared the area and a wave of buses began transporting students home, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff\u2019s office released a statement saying that there had been no threat all along.<br \/>Surveillance video footage showed the man \u201cwas not in possession of a firearm,\u201d the sheriff\u2019s office said. Instead, he appeared to be \u201cholding an umbrella\u00a0\u00bb or perhaps a cane-like object.<br \/>Sheriff\u2019s deputies located and interviewed the man, who was not arrested, said Tangipahoa sheriff chief Jimmy Travis.<br \/>Still, confusion reigned on social media even after the sheriff\u2019s office released the statement on its Facebook page.<br \/>\u201cSo what\u2019s the truth here? Are parents just blowing this out of proportion,\u201d one member of the parents\u2019 group wrote, \u201cor is the school trying to hide this from the parents?\u201d<br \/>In an era when shootings on school campuses in the United States have become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/topic\/subject\/school-shootings-and-violence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">terrifyingly common<\/a> \u2014 and when students are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/16\/reader-center\/students-lockdowns-school-threats.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drilled regularly<\/a>\u00a0on how to protect themselves if a shooter descends on their campus \u2014 Thursday\u2019s false alarm proved \u201cthe best outcome to a call like this,\u201d Travis said.<br \/>During a recent murder investigation, detectives in Tangipahoa Parish faced a challenge they probably wouldn\u2019t have pictured 20 years ago: A v&hellip;<br \/>But though an unarmed person being mistaken for a potential school shooter was the best possible result of a that situation, speculation that spread on social media made law enforcement\u2019s work to investigate the threat more difficult, Travis said.<br \/>\u201cIt makes it hard for us to get the facts out there,\u201d he said.<br \/>Misinformation and rumors spread through the platform&rsquo;s algorithms have become common problems for law enforcement in rural Louisiana with Facebook serving as a gathering place, gossip hub and news source for people there.<br \/>In Tangipahoa Parish, a mostly working-class and largely rural area east of Baton Rouge, the platform has also posed problems for school leaders.<br \/>Rumors about mold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theadvocate.com\/baton_rouge\/news\/education\/article_624c9bec-1b33-11ec-beb7-0319058b3a4d.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing in classrooms<\/a> after Hurricane Ida spread quickly on Facebook, prompting school board members to ask parents to think more critically about where their information is coming from.<br \/>\u201cYou got people who believe everything that\u2019s posted. That\u2019s what happened yesterday,\u201d said Randy Bush, a member of the parish school board, on Friday. \u201cBefore it got stopped, you had people saying there was a shootout at the school.\u201d<br \/>Tangipahoa Schools Superintendent Melissa Stilley and administrators at Hammond Eastside Magnet and Hammond High School did not immediately return phone messages Friday morning.<br \/>James Finn writes for The Advocate as a Report For America corps member.
